Chapter 11

Sydney emailed everyone her menu for Easter. She was including some vegetarian fare for Bonnie and got confirmation it would be fine.

She’d planned roast beef, Brussels sprouts, sweet potatoes, a tofu bake, and an angel food cake with whipped cream and fresh strawberries for dessert.

Sam, Blair, Donna, Bonnie and her beau Steve planned to attend. She’d asked Dusty and Cricket, but they couldn’t make it. They’d had other plans.

When she met Sam at his place that evening, he asked her what she wanted to have for dinner.

She suggested Chubby’s.

“But you were just there,” he replied.

“I can get something else,” Sydney offered.

“No, let’s go for some Thai tonight,” he said. “I’m craving some Pad Thai.”

“Well, I’ll always go for some curry,” Sydney said.

They left for dinner and returned to Sam’s apartment almost two hours later. They got ready for bed, Sam packing a bag with a few items for the weekend he’d spend at Sydney’s house. He kept essentials at her home already. Sydney set the coffeemaker for the next day.

They cuddled in the bed and whispered good night.

Sam’s phone chirped his morning alarm. Sydney rolled over, having heard it, too.

They both got up. Sam showered and dressed for work while Sydney made breakfast for the both of them.

“What are your plans for today?” he asked.

“I’m going to do some prep work for Easter dinner,” she said. “Bonnie – you haven’t met her yet – and her boyfriend are coming and she’s a vegetarian. He’s Jewish, so I’m going to do a beef roast.”

“What’s Bonnie going to eat?” Sam asked.

“I’m making roasted tofurky for her, and anyone else who wants to try it.”

“Tofurky?”

“I know, I found some at the grocery store,” Sydney said. “I have no idea how it will taste, but I’ll have lots of roasted vegetables just in case I over cook it.”

“I might have to have a little taste,” he replied.

“Well, if it comes out right, Bonnie can take the leftovers home.”

“Not before I have my sample,” Sam joked.

They went down to their cars and kissed each other goodbye. “See you tonight,” Sam called out.

Easter dinner went well. The tofurky came out fine and so did the roast beef.

The dinner guests enjoyed getting to know Bonnie and her boyfriend Steve, who was a lawyer. He was a little older than Bonnie but seemed to dote on her. Sydney thought they made a cute couple. She hoped that if it got serious that Bonnie’s father could see how much they seemed to love each other.

Sam did try the tofurky, but after taking one bite, he left the rest on his plate. He preferred Sydney’s roast beef.

As Sam and Sydney cleared the table and washed the dishes later that afternoon, Sydney got a call from John.

“Happy Easter, Mom! You’re a grandmother again!”

“John! Oh! I thought Sara wasn’t due until mid-May.”

“Well, tell that to Isabella Ann Nash,” he replied.

“Isabella,” Sydney said, tears welling in her eyes. “Let me put you on speaker. Sam is here.”

Sydney put her phone down and placed it on speaker mode.
